I want to cook a new recipe and of course I am missing one main ingrediant. Go figure! I dont want to go to the store for poppy seeds when I have sesame seeds already. Is there a taste difference between the two? Any suggestions would be awesome!

There is a big taste difference between the two - if you are making some sort of cake or muffin (lemon poppy seed and almond poppy seed come to mind!) do NOT substitute - sesame seeds will not taste very good at all in this. If it is something more like a bread that is not sweet it will taste different but ok.

There is a difference.....poppy seeds are black & tiny....not sure from what plant..(perhaps the poppy flower?) but I do not that poppy is used in the drug Opium (?). Poppy seeds are great in many salads and citrius recipes and muffins & loaves like Lemon Poppy Seed muffins...they're great! Also Krafts had a poppy seed dressing which is my favourite!

Sesame is light tan colour and a little oval in shape....they are great on buns (McD's)....in oriental dishes like stir frys or citrus based salads...(less flavour than poppy I believe)!

Wish I knew what your recipe is.....so it's hard to say for sure...but I hope I've helped some without too much confusion!

There's a big difference between the two. Poppy Seeds are small and black, and sesame seeds are much larger, and yellow...

They taste much different too.

I wouldn't substitute in this case.

Sesame seed has a nutty, slightly sweet flavor.
Poppy seed is a bluish-grey seed with a crunchy texture.

They both provide a wonderful flavor and texture.

Poppy seeds come from poppy flowers

Would you believe a sesame seed comes from a sesame plant? Indeed, the coveted and tasty seeds from this hardy plant were the first recorded seasoning in history -- the Assyrians used them as far back as 3,000 B.C.

BIG DIFFERENCE:
Poppy seeds are small and spherical, part of the opium drug clan... used in baked goods-- muffins,
Sesame seeds are shaped like raindrops.... used in bread, sprinkled on top of things...
I guess the change won't make a difference if it is a flour product (muffin, cupcake, crepe).
Yes they taste different!
Have fun! Yummy!

A bagel is not as sweet as a donut, and is made from a heavier dough that does not have to rise in the same way as a donut. Also, a bagel is boiled in water and then baked, whereas a donut is fried in hot oil.
