People refer to the Habenero peppers a lot when measuring spicy-ness. I had a sandwich once with chipotle spices in it and I had a hard time trying to finish it. I'm not sure if I've had Habanero before. On a rate of 1-10 (Habanero being 10) where would chipotle place? (I don't know if I spelled chipotle correctly)

Chipotle peppers are smoked jalapenos - they have the same heat level as a jalapeno but have a lovely smoky flavor. Pepper heat is measured by something called the scoville scale.Habaneros are at 100,000 on the scoville scale, chipotles are less than 8,000 (although some are much less hot)

So on a scale of 1-10 with a habanero being a 10 a chipotle would be less than a 1 - a habanero is more than 10 times hotter than a chipotle. But a chipotle can be more than twice as hot as regular Tabasco sauce.

I've had chipotle peppers that were very hot - I've put them in a Mexican chicken soup that I cook, and they're hot enough to make my nose run. But habaneros are in a whole other league - I took a big bite once of a salsa in Yucatan that had a lot of habaneros in it, and I could not speak for several minutes. A chipotle is a dried jalapeno. It's not a new product - existed in Mexico forever -- but it's newly trendy in the United States.

Chipotle are not very spicy, they have a nice flavor though, habanero's are also flavorful, but will set your head on fire. peppers are measured in Scoville units to rate the "heat",
Habanero ranks from 100,000 - 300,000 units
Chipotle is more like 5000 - 10,000
Jalapeno's are about 10,000
If you had a hard time finishing a chipotle sandwich, DO NOT try a habanero!

Habenero is the 10 on the scale and chipotle peppers are smoked jalapenos, and I believe jalapenos are a 5-6 on the scale.

Think of a habenero more as a 27, and chipotle as a mere 3.

I prefer Chipotle pepers to habaneros. Habaneros are just plain HOT!! Chipotle pepers have some heat but are very tasty and won't make you run for the milk.

One drop of habanero sauce in a big pot of chili will get the attention of any at a Tex-Mex outing. I love the bite, but detest the taste. A little goes a long way.

Chipotle seems to be a fresh product on the markets now. Thus far, their bite is nothing compared to even a jalapeno.

"Mom's" comparison is right on target.
