In asthma, cells are over productive and over reactive. So, yes, there is some increase in mucous production. However, It is the spasm caused my the bronchial airways that causes the symptroms.

im not sure about this, but i do believe that when you inhale those allergens, your respiratory tract produce more mucus in an attempt to "wash off" all those allergens since the body does not want any of those. your airways also constricts (narrows) to prevent you from inhaling all those allergens in. it's your body's defense mechanism.
