you can use vegetable shortening instead of lard.

Your tamale dough can be made with Crisco (vegetable shortening) but lard actually brings quite a bit of flavor to the mix so I would not recommend using straight crisco unless you are trying to do a vegetarian tamale.

No they can't, however my mother used to make hers with half lard and half Crisco. The lard keeps the tamales tender and moist. Take my word for it.

You can use Crisco, but they come out much better when you use the Manteca.

no cuz then they will become dry and wont cook that good
