Absolutely! My fiance and I are proof of it!

I got genital herpes over 5 years ago from a guy that I had slept with ONE time. He was not having an outbreak at the time, or showing any signs of the virus. About 3 weeks later I had my first outbreak and my doctor diagnosed me with genital herpes.

My fiance (boyfriend at the time) got the virus from me when I wasn't having an outbreak. About 2-3 weeks after we started sleeping together he developed his first outbreak. I was showing no signs of the virus and was not on an outbreak.

According to Valtrex, 70% of people with genital herpes got it from their partner when they were showing no sings or symptoms of the virus, like an outbreak. So yes, it is definitely possible to get genital herpes from someone, even if they are currently not having an outbreak. There are rare cases though of people who have been together 10+ years, one has the virus and the other doesn't. This is pretty rare though.

Yes you can. I have read studies where the findings indicate that most people who contract herpes actually do so when their partner is not having symptoms. One in 5 people have genital herpes and of that number, only about 20 percent have identifiable symptoms. Many people have the virus in their system but their immune system keeps them from having an outbreak or sometimes a person has a minor and sole outbreak but doesn't identify it as herpes related. A condom will provide some protection however, this is an std that is transmitted by skin on skin contact and it does this by the skin shedding copies of the virus. It is possible to get herpes even though a condom is used because a condom is only covering the penis and leaves other mucous membranes exposed.

drug companies would have you believe yes -- they are in the business of selling you drugs. And other organizations don't wish to get sued by saying no. However, there has to be an area of the genital area that is shedding the virus for you to get it, and that means sores that are beginning to open, or that are open. Secondly, just in case you don't know, herpes is no big deal ---they are like cold sores around your perianal area. They sting a little, but there are ointments that sooth that, and outbreaks in most people are 3-5 in any 5 year period, unless your immune sys. is compromized. The press made a big deal of herpes in the 80's -- the disease has been around forever. Suddenly, AIDS appeared on the scene, and guess what????? no where did you see an article on herpes for the next 20 years. The real danger of herpes is not to an adult, but to a pregnant woman about to deliver if she is having an outbreak. Nasty permanent neurological damage can occur to her emerging child if its mucus membranes come in contact with open sores. It is remedied by doing what is called a dry birth, or alternatively a C-section. Otherwise, herpes is just an inconvenience, nicest to avoid sex for the 7-14 days one has those little sores. Think of them as cold sores on your bottom.

not only is it possible, but it is more likely (statistically at least)

a recent study, can't find it off-hand, found that upwards of 70% of new herpes infections occurred when no lesions were visible(think about it, are you going to have sex with someone with sores all over their genitals?)

condoms are also often innefective against herpes, since they don't cover the entire surface area of both parties' genitals

Yes. Most people don't know they have it because there is usally no signs. Best thing to do if you are going to be sexually active is to get tested. After being tested and you do not have herpes, use a condom anytime time you decide to have sex.

Yes!!!! Also if you have oral (lip) herpes you can pass through kisssing and oral sex and vice versa. And yes it can spread even when there are no visible signs. So if your girlfriend performs oral sex on you and she has herpes (cold sores) you may get genital herpes. Hopefully that answers your questions.

yes. Even though there is no outbreak the virus is still active. You can even contract herpes if you are using a condom. However the use of a condom does reduce the risk significantly.
