Take her to the emergency room ASAP! I am a clinical laboratory scientist. Cats carry over 100 different strains of bacteria in their mouth at any given time. Because of the infection with multiple types of bacteria it can quickly become life threatening and/or lead to the loss of the limb or area that was bitten. Because she has diabetes you should especially be concerned. The fever could cause her body to utilize sugar faster causing unsafe drops in blood sugar levels. She is also at greater risk of infection because of the diabetes. Emergency rooms are required to provide treatment regardless of your ability to pay. You DO NOT have to have any insurance or money to be seen, treated, and given your prescriptions. When you fill the antibiotics, ask the pharmacist for generics. THey work just as well and will save you a ton of money. But PLEASE take her to the Emergency room!!

You need to take your mom to the emergency room or to the doctor asap. I am not kidding. I work as a nurse in a hospital and cat bites are lethal and even more so if she has diabetes. We have pts admitted to the hospital who's cats have bitten them and they become septic off of a cat bite. I have seen more than 1 person admitted for cat bites. It takes IV antibiotic therapy to get rid of the infection. In your mothers case, it may cost her a limb. Please dont hesitate. Tell your mom to go to the doctor or the ER as soon as possible. Then she can apply for assistance with the bill thru the hospital.

Did the bite break skin and did she bleed and not clean the wound? Does the wound look infected? If so, I suggest you go to a clinic and have someone tend to it if it is that serious. Some peoople get "cat scratch fever" from wounds and she may have that. It raises blood pressure and that can be dangerous if she has other medical problems.

An infected animal bite can be serious. Most ERs will see a sick person without insurance. If the cat is a stray a rabies series is indicated.

Get to an ER now. For one thing she needs a tetanus shot right away.
