They are still around - go to Texas, Wyoming, or Canada and look around any of the really big ranches - for instance the Four Sixes in the Panhandle. Some may be using ATVs instead of horses but there are still cowboys. There aren't many, but they are still needed.

got to agree with stephen H, they all became builders, i know because i work in the construction industry,and i have seen some of the worst cowboys anywhere.
