i've never been on them, but i read an article on yahoo news about how some people are completely dehabilitated after trying to get off of the anti-depressants. they're addicted and the dr. told them they wouldn't be.

You must do this in conjunction with your Doctor - it will depend on which anti-depressant you are on. I would guess you maybe taking a class referred to as SSRI.

Have a look at this link on paroxetine

Anti depressants are classed as non addictive as they are less likely to be abused people do however get addicted to meds used for aniety and depression usually antipsychotics or tranquillizers eg trazadone olanzapine xanax diazepam temazepam lorazepam etc as this not only take the bad feelings away they can also make you feel stoned/drowsy and some people become addicted to this feeling.
If withdrawn correctly and slowly by gp over a period of time side effects should be quite mild or non existent they are usually strong if someone stops taking these meds abruptly and therefore their anxiety or depression increases tenfold you can also suffer from this if you stop taking trong painkillers abruptly. All withdrawal should be discussed with gp and there are national drugs help lines who can refer you to a call center that deal solely with antidepressant addiction.

I took anti-depressants for a year on two separate occasions. There were no side effects and no complications. It was hard to fall asleep at first, but the problem went away in a short time. You should not quit suddenly, but follow the doctor's advice on cutting back gradually.

A few time I've forgotten to take them over a period of up to 2 weeks. It's just like the side effects of when you first take them, but you get that after you go off them, and then again when you start taking them. Side effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea, irritability, all the nasty stuff.

I have stopped taking antidepressants several times, mostly weaning properly. The only real side effects that I had were a little irritability, insomnia and a tendency toward diarrhea. I can't remember what effects went with what drug though.

I've been weaned off antidepressants 4 times in my life
Normally, you won't notice an immediate difference.

I cannot tell the difference between going "cold turkey" and "tapering off"- I've done both, I dont think it makes that much difference

Every medicine & person is different. Common withdrawal problems are suicidal thoughts, feeling out of control "loosing your mind", headaches, etc.) Always wean off of meds according to your doctors suggestions.
