You're confusing atheists with agnostics. An agnostic is someone who doesn't know what they believe in (normally they don't care). An atheist is someone who believes there is no God. They therefore have an active view on religion, and therefore have useful comments to make on religion.
Another point is that these days in the UK there are a hell of a lot more atheists than Christians or Muslims or any other religion. Therefore there a lot more atheists on this site, and so you'll get a lot more answers from atheists.

I think a true Atheist wouldn't even bother answering the question. But then again, some people who have been abused, mislead, or short-changed by whatever religion might want to understand how this could happen to them. Some of them might actually be interested in different religions, like philosophers etc. Some are absolutely puzzled by certain elements of a religion. For example, what I don't understand is why people follow a religion that threatens them with hell and stuff...you see there are things that just don't make sense. Having said this, I'm quite spiritual (maybe not religious) but I do believe in higher beings and that karma is very powerful. You basically need to be good to people and animals and stuff and lead a decent life. More importantly, look after yourself and your family and then you shouldn't really go wrong...

Athiests non believers
Understand that many of the People who do not believe the things that are talked about by organized religion, have come to the conclusions that they have after years of study, prayer and countless hours of contemplation about these things. They are not confused, being mislead or any of the things that are being said about them by the people who promote these ideas.
A great number of them are some of the most intelligent people you will ever meet. They are very spiritual and often have an amazing and unshakeable faith in God. A far greater faith I might add than those who teach nonsense about a judgmental God who would allow punishment. These people often care so much about God and their faith that they have become self taught religious scholars, who can speak at great length about the parallel teachings of the world’s religions. These people do not need to be saved; they need to be listened to.
They will usually tell you a very different story from the one organized religion tells us. They speak of an unconditionally loving God that they have finally found by their ceaseless attempts to find the truth. A god that loves each and every one of us exactly the way that we are. A God that has never had a single thought of any hint of imperfection on our part. A God that has no silly thoughts of Judgment or punishment or revenge disguised as justice.
These ideas may not seem to sound like the truth to you, but this is for a very good reason. If you have been told a lie about something your whole life, when you hear the truth it can be difficult to understand because it sounds so unlike the lie you have grown accustom to.
I was raised catholic. I attended their mass 6 days a week for 9 years. Studied their religious teachings for yet another hour each day. On my own I have studied Buddhist teaching rather extensively. I also studied Confucian thought, Zen wisdom, The Bhagavad gita and other Vedic texts. The bible and the many different Gnostic texts that never made it into the bible. The Dead Sea scrolls and The Nag Hammadi works. I have actually probably forgotten more than I can remember. I’m not trying to impress you, with all of this. Just trying to make the point that I take this very seriously. After nearly 60 years of careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that most of what organized religion teaches about God, creation, and the after life is simple nonsense. It is as though religion has set its self up as the worldly authority of something that it knows almost nothing about, God, spirituality, and the afterlife.
The only way these false ideas of A judgmental God have survived this long is because of the practice of indoctrinating young children with these false Ideas when they are to young to consider the validity of these ideas from a basis of logic. These children are then given no choice in the matter, it is essentially believe this or burn in hell.
Not really much of an option is it. If these teachings were actually true would they need to be guarded so carefully with threats of hellfire and eternal damnation? Not likely.
If you would like to discuss this further you may contact me directly. If you wold rather not I can understand your reluctance.
Love and blessings
Your brother

Atheists don't feel the need to throw around the phrase "true atheist." Atheism is simply the lack of belief in any gods, there is no such thing as a "true atheist" because we all have different opinions. Atheists answer a lot (because alot is not a word) of questions in "Religion and Spirituality" because there are plenty of spiritual atheists (Buddhist come to mind) and because many non-spiritual atheists like to broaden their knowledge of different religions. Some theists, on the other hand (like yourself), make ignorant claims about atheism without knowing the facts.

To be an atheist, you need to understand the whole scenario of faith and religion so you can become a true atheist.
I am an atheist, and to back up my views on things I have looked into many things to do with 'religion and spirituality', just so I know what the topic is about and why i agree and disagree with whatever.
Just because I'm an atheist, doesnt mean I cannot answer any question on this section.
There you have it.... all the best to all

Well, they still have to do RE compulsory and maybe their parents made them go to church when they were younger so they feel they may as well share their knowledge.
A person may not like watching the news, but if somebody told them about something really big, like the terrorist stuff going on now, and somebody asks about a certain part of it so they decide they may as well answer to either help them, or to gain 2 points with a chance of gaining 10.
Or they may just like to be annoying and decide as they don't believe in any Gods they are going to go and mock the religious people.
Now, do you think I am religious, or an atheist?

Errr.... the same reason ugly people answer questions in the health and beauty section (a harsh comparison, but I think the logic works)
The choice athiests have made is a choice based on the same evidence as every one else. They are surely able to discuss it and express themselves the same as everyone else. Despite the strength of conviction, I dont believe anyone is really in a position to say THEY are right and everyone else wrong and until that is the case everyone should be able to contribute to the great universal debate.
Personally, I dont see the problem. All things should be questioned, for it is answers to these questions that makes what is right grow stronger.
I think the problem is lack of respect - of which I have examples from ALL sides of the fence.

No, it isn't odd at all. We have answers to questions asked here, just like you do. What is your real problem with atheists asking and answering questions on a Q&A site? Do we make you uncomfortable?

It's good to get many views on one topic. Or else it would be a one way discussion.
Eg Q "Do you love Jesus"
A: "Yes cause I'm Christian"
"No cause I'm not Christian"
Atheist simply add the Grey to what would otherwise be a black and white world.
