who are obsessed by the material world (Cue Madonna). The closest people to me do not understand or appreciate the important things in life, their only interest is designer labels, money blah blah, They complain about what they don't have believing that this world really owes them something. They p*ss me off because they see friends and family as someone to mark their lives against, living each day competing and trying to outdo each other at every given moment.

I really have no faith in people anymore. Is it just me? Am I a freak

No it's not just you. Believe me, I have felt this way for a LONG time, almost 5 years now about people who are supposed to be my friends and I'm only 21, not that old, but I am still intelligent enough to know that the more important things in life can't have a price on it. My parents always taught me, be careful who you trust because people who act like your friends, aren't always as they seem but I never believed them. I used to trust everyone who was nice to me and I had to learn this lesson the hard way... experience. A lot of people I know are constantly going out of their way to get part-time jobs, while struggling to pay off their student loans and on top of that spending money on things like cell phones, latest fashions, i-pods, etc. They only care about material objects that give you no meaning in life whatsoever. Now, I am no one to judge, but they say they care about the people dying in the war by saying things like "I hope God helps them," and maybe down in their hearts, they DO care but constantly buying stuff for yourself will not solve the problem. My crowd of "friends," if you want to call them that, often make fun of people who don't dress the way they do or who can't afford to buy the kind of things that they can. I remember them saying about another girl once, "she wears so much make up, God! She looked so bad!" Fine, let her wear a lot of make-up, she can do what she wants and what makes her comfortable. Why do you need to go behind her back and talk about it? These people are supposed to be my friends, and they have often even made fun of me because I don't dress the way they do. Well, I don't put importance to material things, since I am on a tight budget right now, I am saving my money for more important things like paying off debts and mortgage but they can't understand that, all they see is that I dress differently. I find it really sad, and try to distance myself from people who are so shallow but it's really hard since I am pretty much like you and have lost faith in people. With people like Bush starting wars, people like this in my life, all the people you hear about in the news who are killing for money/oil, etc. I really don't know who I can trust anymore...

Nope, I see this all the time. I worry more about how I'm taking care of myself and others, what sort of mark I'm making on the world, and what sort of person I am than I ever will what I own. I hate that the SUV is so popular for non-utility reasons considering the state of the global environment plus the cost of gas. I was totally turned away from two of my friends last year when they told me - independantly of each other - that the only thing that makes them happy is material possessions. Made me sick, I'd known one of them for something like 16+ years and thought I knew him better.

No, you aren't alone, the general population sucks, just keep faith and hold out for the rare birds who feel differently.

The way I analyze these types of people is this way-"I've got the ipod-check-got the Louis vuitton-although I know I can't afford it-and my a s s will be grass soon because of those bills, but must look stylish to feel good and make others believe I have the package-check-I've the latest cell phone/along with the ring tones-the parada glasses and the jewelry that say rich and fabulous-check,and don't forget that car-I have to look good in not just what I wear, but what I drive, so I my latest gadgets will be superior together and I'll look too damn good for people to even touch me, and people will want to be me-double check-VIP here I come"!!

Yes. I was amazed by a former colleague whose six year old had everything, should she now buy him a DVD-player to go with his television? It is really mindboggling.

I agree with you. They try to top those around them and convince themselves that they are more successful then them. It causes them stress and that is not success.
