If you mean on Windows and if you mean "Download manager" then Go!Zilla is the best one, however is shareware. The Flashgot extension for the Firefox browser is also superb. (If you don't have Firefox yet - get it - it is an excellent browser ).

If you mean Peer2Peer software. I'd recommend Torrent programs for good results. Azureus and uTorrent are the best clients for Windows. Torrent software provide downloads from torrent search engines such as http://torrentspy.com/ Torrents are the most widely used method to share data - hence you can get almost anything, however need to search a bit for the *.torrent files which you need to download what you want to.

As for `simpler` p2p software: Don't use Limewire. If you even consider it get Frostwire instead. It has the same features, doesn't have advertisments and it has not been forcefully contracted to the music industry yet.

Depending on what sort of program you are talking about I have found Free Download Manager good for getting apps from sites, and I have found EDonkey good for sharing P2P.

I do however use Limewire also but have found that there are a lot of viruses on files that are available on the Limewire network.
