An HDMI DVD player will hook up to any TV with an HDMI input. Most often, standard CRT (Picture tube) TV's do not come with this input. Only High definition TVs come with this input. With that being said, you do not need an LCD or a plasma TV to use HDMI, but you do need an HDTV with an HDMI input. Some CRT TVs (HDTV ones) do have this input.
However, if you have an HDMI DVD player, but not an HDMI input on your TV, you can actually still use the DVD player. I am unaware of any DVD player with only HDMI output. You can still use the other video and audio outputs available (Composite, s-video, component) on the DVD player to hook up to your non-HDMI TV.
I hope this helps.
