I would definitely recommend Denver, Colorado. It's a major metropolitan city, with so much to do. First of all, the setting is spectacular, at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city is very clean and has a lot of civic pride. It's quite affordable compared to other major cities like New York...and definitely All-American. Catch a good old fashioned baseball game at the Colorado Rockies baseball stadium...Coors Field. Eat hot dogs and popcorn, and enjoy an American tradition. Denver has some fantastic shopping, Cherry Creek Mall and Larimer Square have an awesome selection of stores. There are some great areas to walk around in Downtown Denver, don't miss the LoDo area, a very cool area of old warehouses that have been converted to shops, restaurants and loft residences.
Denver is surrounded by the great outdoors, some of the most stunning scenery in the world. The AA Stables in Idaho Springs (just west of Denver) offers horseback rides to "Old West" style destinations such as gold mines and abandoned frontier sites. Further west and you're in the Rockies, check out Aspen (a couple of hours west of Denver)...it's been a playground of movie stars for decades, you won't believe who you can run into there.
Since you're spending a month, check out condominium rentals...cheaper than a hotel and much more comfortable...you can keep food and prepare some meals if you like. Denver is very accessible from anywhere, it's one of the 10 busiest airports in the world.Hope you choose Denver, you'll love it!

Wow a month sounds great. I suppose it depends on how much money you want to spend on traveling here.
Because if you have unlimited money... I would do the most fabulous ridiculous trip ever and here it is:
Well I don't know where you are coming from, but I'll assume you'll be flying over the Atlantic. So... I'd say, fly into NYC, then catch a flight immediately out and over to San Francisco. Spend 5 days there. Then fly to Las Vegas and spend 3-4 days there and one of those days go take a helicoptor tour over the grand canyon! Then I'd say fly to Austin, Texas for some REAL American experiences... and eat some big steak and see the cowboys and whatever (I've actually never been to Texas, but I hear Austin is the most civilize part of it). Stay there for 3-4 days. Then Fly to Miami, Florida and shop and go to the beaches, or you could fly to Orlando, Florida and go to Disney World and Universal Studios and that whole fun thing for a week. Then fly up to Washington, DC and see the sites there for 3 days, then take the train from Washington to Philadelphia for maybe 2 days to see those sites, and then the train (these train rides about 2 hours each.. no big deal), up to New York City and spend a whole week or 10 days there and see all of the sites and go shopping!
Also, instead of flying everywhere, if you wanted to, you could rent a car in San Francisco and drive across the country... but if you're really just here to experiencing shopping and clean living, then that is probably too rough.
But... if you are on a tighter budget then I'd recommend maybe renting a place in NYC for 1 month, since that is probably the most economical way to do it. And see the sites in NY and do shopping there and take day trips or an overnight trip to each Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, or Boston at some point. You can do that by train, or you can rent a car, though having a car in NYC sucks, so just rent it for those days you'll be gone. Philadelphia is only a 2 hour drive max, and Washington or Boston is only 3.5-4 hours.
Have fun!

The best place to shop I've heard is New York City. Although San Francisco I think could probably give it a run for its money on that.
Your daughter might enjoy time at a 'dude' ranch or perhaps going to Yellowstone.
If you include Canada as part of
"America" as in North America I recommend Alberta and British Columbia for mountains, beaches shopping, and horse back riding. Spruce Meadows in Alberta is a very famous equistrian riding venue and the prices for admission aren't that steep from what I understand.
Bon voyage!

If you like horse rideing you should go to the Grand Canyon in Arazona. Its not a horse ride but you get to ride donkeys down into the canyon. It is also very beautiful and about half a day's drive from Las Vegas. On the way you can drive over the Hoover dam. It isnt the largeset dam in the US but its really cool. Las Vegas isnt as dirty as it used to be they have lots of high end shops and just walking on the streets is entertaining.
Disney world in Florida is always awesome but not really a natural site except for their new zoo area. In florida you can also go to Bush gardens (owned by the people that make Budwieser beer) it is more animal themed with rides and entertainment. you could take a boat ride in the everglades and see alligators. Or go deep sea fishing.
But if you really want clean living just go hang out with the Amish in pennsylvania or something.

Glacier National Park, Montana Great Basin National Park, NV Upper Peninsula, Michigan Flagstaff, Arizona Wind Caves, South Dakota This is a few of the thousands of places to sightsee and experience. America has some of the best land in the world, many people here are too short-sighted to notice it from their shopping malls. Take advantage of it before it has a price tag put on it and it is sold and developed!

there are a number of nice places of all types.
for your daughter there are lots of horseback riding places in the Catskill Mountains about 2 hours north of NYC.
My wife rode for the first time there last spring and loved it.
