If you are looking at building abdominal strength, then, yeah, sit-ups can certainly do the job. There are other ab exercises you should do to strengthen all areas of the abs, but sit-ups certainly are a core component.

If you are looking to trim up, become fit, lose weight, or magically lose belly fat -- then no, they aren't going to work. They don't burn enough calories and certainly aren't aerobic enough to challenge your fitness level.

Yes they strengthen your abdominal muscles.

No they do not reduce the fat surrounding those muscles.

When combined with cardio they are effective.
