What is the principle of Gyro compass.

Most of the time it is used in Space and air plains, magnetic compass is useless beyond certain altitude, high flying plains can not rely on land marks even on a clear day.

It can be use any place.

Principle:

It is base on the principle of inertia. In this case a ring rotating on an axis at extremely high constant speed. Like any mariner compass it can be mounted in a Gamble arrangement. Before starting from a port compass can be pointed to the place where the ship is going, as long as nothing fails and ring does not slow down pointer due to inertia will always point to the destination.

In case of space craft it is usually set pointing at earth or the destination.

Foot note:

Inertia in this case is the rotational momentum of the rotating ring and speed is the Major player in keeping the pointer stable. The ring and the axis are kept light.
