These are the ways to learn English with fun! It worked for me!
Watch movie with English language and with your native language subtitles. By this way you can understand and learn the language automatically. It also improves your vocabulary knowledge.
Read out loud an English book. By this way you can learn to pronounce it better, and also you'll learn bout the grammar.
Sing along with English songs, and try to find the meaning. By this way, you can improve your vocabularies, and also improve your pronunciations.
Have fun! ;-)

English is a compulsory subject in my national curriculum. However, it is very stupid. I am already in Grade 9, i'm still supposed to learn simple present/past tense. If I hadn't enrolled in an English class at a language centre, there would be much more grammatical errors in my writing. So basically, I've been learning English at school since I was three. I learnt the basics while I was in kindergarten and primary school, later greatly improved my English when I enrolled in the language centre, because the education system here (especially at Middle school level) is deplorable and basically focuses too much on exams, hence teaches students "how to answer the questions in exams" more than knowledge and skills.

i'm a Filipino. In my country the Philippines english is not our native language, however, almost all filipinos are very fluent in the english language because it is used as a medium of instruction in all levels of the educational system. If you want to learn the language and perfect it you should use it everyday when you have the chance to, maybe written or spoken. Enrolling in an english class may also help.

I learned some from school. they started to teach english in first or second grade (age 7-8). I improved a lot by watching television in english, especially with the simpsons (simpsons now help me with my spanish). i perfectionned english a lot by playing video games... rpgs (role playing games) or carmen sandiego on my computer. The chatting on the net helped a lot too. singing helped too with the prononciation. now, english is so intricked in my head that i can switch from french to english without a problem. i dont even have to think 'how to translate' except for quotes and expressions used in french. Im not that fluent in spanish, but not that bad either. and im only beggining with the german :P Reading children's book can also help learning some vocabulary without losing whats happening in the story (ohh im due to go to the library for some spanish :P)
well.. i guess the secret is in practice, like anything else.

It was my second language....and along with it came the kind of colonial thinking that just didn't do me any good...

Exactly as the others said. Are you fluent in the languages spoken by people who visit America (my guess as to where you are from)? I doubt it. That is such an American attitude that everyone else in the world should accommodate you. When you go visit another country you should study up on at least the basics of the language.

I was taught english in hk schools before I came to america. But since it's british, i have the accent. I watch a lot of tv like the simpsons and listen to the radio to learn and correct the accent. and I have friends that correct me sometimes. force myself to read more will improve it and get myself out of esl.

I studied. In fact it was our medium of communication at school.
Read a lot of english books, newspapers, magazines, anything that was written in english. And if possible, talk to people who are good in english. Remember, practice makes perfect.
