Going way back, most Protestant religions split from Catholicism, out of some grievance or disagreement (protest-ant). That is the beginnings of what some call "High Protestantism", or the larger older more established religions.
Catholics have a "Creed" that they recite at every service that speaks of the basic tenants of the faith.
Some general differences include the Infallibility of the Pope on faith & morals, the reality of the Eucharist, the role of Mary in the church, the #books of the Bible, the role & power of clergy.

Catholics put great importance in the rite of the last Supper and the transformation of the Eucharist, some Protestant denominations cast their primary focus on the powers of the Holy Spirit.

It may be too general of an explanation for what you were looking for, but I did not want to appear the theological, expert nor did I want to advertise one denomination over another.

Catholics & Protestants ... Yes ! My favourite subject - Now the Muslim Jew thing in Lebanon is settled ... we can get back to real religious problems... Catholic's are like a more Mafia organised version of the Muslims - they want everything their own way too. They want to be seggregatted from society by demanding & getting their own Catholic Religious orientated schools ( in Scotland its pure Politics the place if full of Catholics and they have votes ) - Here is a for instance - My Daughter is just about to start school - 2 of her wee friends at her nursery are going to a Catholic school - it is very disturbing having to diplomatically explain to a 5 year old that her wee friends Mummy & Daddy - dont want their wee girl to go to the same non-denmanational school as the rest of the nursery class. What is that all about - forcing religion on children is a crime - and separating communities Via religion causues hatred & crime. The relgious bit - Catholics get on their knees to Mary - who was a Hooker friend of Jesus - thats if you believe the story of the Bible -I have never been able to grasp that... is it not God or Jesus Christians are supposed to pray to. ?? is Mary the True Being ? Cant wait for the other comments !!

*Rolls eyes @ Protestants being ignorant*....... ANYWAY.... I have many Catholic friends, the biggest difference between them and I are, I do not believe in calling anyone Father religiously, except God, I never even call my Dad Father except for technically speaking, and No I do NOT believe I have to confess my sins to any other human being, (namely a Priest) the Bible doesn't say to do that, and why would I say hail Mary?, she can't forgive me. And I'm not going to call a Priest father, he has nothing about him that warrants him a father Figure to me, he is a leader in the ministry of God and that's the respect I give him, same as any Pastor or Minister. I mean don't get me wrong, Mary was a special person to God, and the Mother of Jesus, but I'm sorry I'm not going to worship her, or call on her name when I'm asking forgiveness FROM God. Or praise her on a higher level than Jesus...I ask God for forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ, Mary isn't involved in my sins, and she can't forgive me, that can only come from God.
Secondly I don't believe you can choose to knowingly sin all week and run to Church once a week to be absolved from your willingness to sin. And no that's not something I heard, it is what was suggested to me by more than one Catholic.
Furthermore, Chris if you're reading this, ummm I don't go around attacking any faith, and my non-Catholic friends don't either, naming one religion (Protestants) and stereotyping us as a whole is what is really ignorant, so I think by doing that you just make yourself look like an idiot and I'm sure your not speaking for the whole Catholic Church, when you spout out your hatred of Protestants, is hate not a sin in the Catholic Church?...stereotyping and putting people you don't even know down because of their religion?...is this acceptable in the Catholic Church?... I think you should go to the Father and ask forgiveness and pray for your anger issues while you're there.

Umm... The existence of Catholics. I don't think I've ever heard of prodistants before. Unless of course it's a spelling error.

catholics place a greater emphais on Mary, and they also have a whole bunch of saints. they have a chain of command including bishops and the pope. Protestants do not have as great an emphais on Mary, and belive that everyone with salvation is a saint and will be equal under God in heaven. they also have no allegence to any popes, bishops, etc. when groups of preachers get together they meet on equal footing, but the elder ones are generally given more respect. the rest of the differences are just in worship service structure, but that varies from church to church even within a denomination.

There were some that broke away from the Catholic church to form there own groups for worship. People like Calvin and Luther protested the teachings of the Catholic church and started their own churches. (e.g.Lutherans and Calvinists) So the ones that protested the Catholic church became to be known as Protestants.

not too much really.
Firstly, the Bible translations are different (Protestant translated from original Hebrew, Chaldean and Greek directly into English -- Catholic translated from Hebrew, Chaldean, Greek into Latin, and then again eventually into English.
The mass/ church services are different, with Catholic very much about ritual and repetetiveness weekly, wheras Protestant will tend to differ more in the scripture read weekly.
Also, Catholics believe the Pope is the sole church leader/Christ's representative on earth, and is infallible.
Protestants are made up of many different denominations, such as Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopalian, Evangelic, Baptist, etc.
In the end, they may differ their rituals, but they are still teaching out of the same Book if you take it back to the original languages.

The Church and practises.

The Catholic goes with the main catholic church, lead by the Pope. Its main doctrine is the Eucharist, i.e. mass. The protestants are more liberal in praise in worship. They have more in numbers in terms of churches, sects and are relatively younger in historical age (this has large significance and influence in their doctrines and teachings, as well as practices, but is outside the scope of your question).

general differences in beliefs: the recognition of saints and Mother Mary as a divine figure, and the practices of Eucharistic Rituals, i.e. Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, the roles of the Priest and the clergymen, etc etc.

Protestants tend to focus more on the Bible itself and go by scripture alone, whereas Catholics believe in not only the Bible's teachings, but also what was implied by the writings. This is why catholics have the seven sacraments, the apostle's creed, etc.

Catholic Church....the original...back 2000 years.

Protestant churches...some 40,000 to 50,000 individual groups that all conduct themselves the way they choose. History only back to the Protestant Reformation approximately 500 years back.

Protestants are also, for the most part, completely ignorant of what Catholicism is and continually attack it with no clue of what they speak of. They do not try to study it or learn from Catholicism what it is....they just repeat some garbage they heard from somebody else talking...like a parrot.

The Catholic Church is not a sect, or division, or denomination of Christianity. It is THE CHURCH going back to the original Apostles. Everything else outside of the Catholic Church would be a sect, division, or denomination.
