The difference between self-descipline and punishment is both psychological and physical.
Self-discipline can be learned but seldom taught. It includes control of actions through control of thoughts and control of the expression of emotions. Very selfish people usually have little self-discipline. It works from the inside out.
Punishment can be learned and taught. One form is a list of simple rules. If a rule is broken, a punishment is then delivered. The punishment can come from the self, but it is usually implanted there by another. Punishment usually works from the outside in.
Self-discipline usually requires time to develop. A simple experiment was designed to test this. One could start with a kindergarden class and work the way up through age groups. This is call the delayed cookie experimant.
Give children a cookie. Tell them that when you return, if they still have all of their cookie, you will give then 4 more cookies (of their choice). Then leave. Come back in perhaps 5 minutes (or longer for older children). Most children at age 5 will eat the cookie while you are gone. As the age increases, more and more children will still have their cookie.
This is an example of self discipline (don't eat the cookie) and reward or punishment (4 more or no additional).
Self-discipline akways seem to work out better in the long run. Look at Prohibition. It was based upon punishment and was a nightmare.

Self discipline is a habit that you impose upon yourself Perhaps you play the piano 7 hours at a stretch. You love it.
Punishment is being set at the piano with a clock, told to practice for an hour and you hate it.

Self discipline is when one corrects oneself or denies oneself in order to learn control over ones appetites or passions. Punishment is correction given by another after the fact.
