I Currently am suffering from an abscessed tooth. I know I need to go to the dentist. However, my situation is as such, that I cannot go to a dentist right now. In the past, I have been prescribed penicillin, ampicillin, and erythromycin for my abscesses. This time I have Dicloxacillin to cure the infection. Because it was not prescribed by a dentist, I am wondering if it will work. I always thought that specific antibiotics took care of specific infections. Opposed to any antibiotic can taking care of any affection. If so then why have so many different antibiotics on the market? Oh yeah, for the money (how could I forget). Anyway thanks for your input

While it's true that there are some antibiotics for certain ailments (they always give me biaxin for my sinus infections). There are types of general antibiotics that will do a general job.

Dicloxacillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and bone, ear, skin, and urinary tract infections.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses.

It sounds like it will do a good job from what I found.

They are always making new pencillians because:
1. They want to make money
2. There are new strains of infections all the time that are becoming resistant to antibiotics
3. Sometimes they make stronger and stronger versions
4. It gives the scientists something to do.

Your doctor or dentist will have to see you to prescribe proper antibiotics because they are specific. You need to go ASAP because abscessed teeth are especially dangerous. Regardless of your situation, there must be a public clinic in your area or some way to obtain the required care. Check your public health agencies and non-profit agencies.

Amoxicillin is appropriate as "pink thong" suggests, I was also prescribed Ampicillin, as you have in your question (but it gave me the runs, if you want to know!)

Is it definitely a real abcess? I only ask because when I thought thats what I had, my doctor said it was due to my poor brushing, food had got stuck between a tooth and the gum.

Take the medicine that the dentist give you. If you are not allergic to it, you should take it.
There are so many antibiotics on the market to deal with resistance. There are additions of hydroxy groups or methyl groups put on the lactam group to try and trick the beta-lactamase enzyme.
