Probably not.
Though Hezbollah is claiming victory, the fact that they will be pushed north and an international force will occupy southern Lebanon is almost an ideal solution for Israel. It is clear that they did not want to go back to being an occupying force as a 17-year lesson is not quickly forgotten. Instead they will have every other country suffering the local wrath of Hezbollah. I can't see how they would have attained these goals through dipolomacy.
Given the extremely high cost of this Israeli "defeat" to poor Lebanon, I have to believe that many Lebanese will later conclude that the price was too high and that a strong, legitimate government is the only way to avoid this from happening again. A non-islamist government that is.

From AP on Aug. 8, 2006
"The United Nations, the U.S. and Israel have long demanded the
deployment of the Lebanese army along the border with Israel.
But until Monday, the Lebanese government refused, saying it won't
act as a policeman for Israel and that a deployment without an Arab-
Israeli peace settlement would risk having its army destroyed by
Israel's more powerful military."
Seems they tried diplomacy.

Sure...Israel should have sent an ambassador to the Hezbollah embassy. What sort of diplomacy can exist with an organization bent on your destruction?

It takes two rational parties to have a rational discussion. There are no rational parties in Hezbollah.
How would I discuss terms with a neighbor who wanted my land and my house, and wished me dead at any cost?

Talking calmly with someone while they plan your demise is the ultimate favor you can do for them. Depending on which side you're really on...diplomacy would have been better...better for the terrorists

NO! why should any country allow a terrorist organization to capture two of there soldiers and not do anything about it? israel should break that cease fire deal and finish the job they started. it would be a favor to the whole world.
