Was wondering do dogs have memory? Recently my brother just gave away his dog who he had kept for more than 1 year. His new owner told my brother that the dog is sitting at the gate everyday. He seems to be waiting for my brother. Is't true? Will he get use to his new owner? Will he still remember my brother after some time? Really curious. Such a pity dog. Thought of visiting him someday. But not sure if he will remember me or not.

don't give your dogs away, they are like people. my dogs run and jump on you when you come home from work or back from vacation. Recently my aunt was in the hospital for a month, she came back and dogs were crying and jumping all over her. is new owner related to brother. my dog had puppies that my wife gave to her dad at 9 weeks, he remembered us when we visited and still does. so if for more than a year, doesnt just remember him, hes special to the dog

Yes they do have memory, a very good memory in fact.

Some dogs get over it some don't. It all depends on the dogs age, the new owners and the dogs acceptace of the new surroundings.

If the dog has gone to a good home after time it will forget the smell of the previous owner, settle in and be happy.
If you visit it will not have the same impact as say a parent visiting a child that has been long lost after appx 5 years old (memory recognition age). The dog may remember you but will more than likely not be bothered one way or the other.

Given that this dog is only 1 it would more than likely accept the new surroundings pretty soon as long as it is happy.

Are you sure the dog is not waiting for one of the new owners to return home, a child off the school bus, dad coming home from work, the postman that normally says hello in a cheery voice, a person that passes every day and gives a pat or treat?

Of coarse dogs have a memory how do you think it is possible for a dog to find it's way back to you and over a continent, if the dog really cares for your brother it is possible that the dog will run back to your brother. The dog is fretting for your brother, I doubt very much that the dog will get used to his new owner, that dog will have to be collected from his friend and taken back home or the both of them will lose the dog through longing. The dog will remember your brother for as long as the dog lives.

I'm keeping a dog a friend of my neighbor gave me for awhile to keep out of the shelter. The dog's little girl was visiting them a month later and the dog went nuts trying to get to her, even though she was in the house and not visible. The girl came over and they had a great time together. I believe he will remember that family and me after he goes to a new home, but it will become a very dim memory over time, to the point of him maybe having a good feeling about me, if he met me again, but not knowing why. I definitely believe he will grow to adore his new owner, as much as this dog adores me in a short time. He didn't instantly like me or my rules. I then filled in with training some missing obedience and taught him a new trick and he thinks I'm too cool, now! The new owner just needs to bond with his new dog and love and time will take care of the rest.

The dog should get used to the new owner, and dogs have an incredibly long memory, especially if you made a big imprint on their life (e.g - owning them for a year) There is little chance that the dog will ever forget your brother, but he should find love and comfort in his new owner, if it is over a year and the dog hasn't adjusted, maybe this owner isn't right for him.

Dogs have a great memory and remember everything. Unlike fish who have an attention spam of 3 seconds which explains why they don't moan about swimming round in a tank every day.( Because they don't remember. Dogs are clever animals yours must be xtra special.

I think a lot of expert will tell you they don't. I think they have a very good memory's. We had a dog, we got from the animal shelter, this little dog all of her life was looking for the old owner everyone that walked in the door she was hoping it was her old owner.

Yes, we adopted a dog from a lady who had really bonded with her, but was unable to keep her..It took her several months to quit waiting for her owner's car..she would get excited when a car of the same make would go by..about 4 months.

When grown pups come back to visit, they sometimes remember their mom or littermates, but not all of them do... they all remember me, though.... Well, one didn't.

Of course they have memory, how else could they remember the things we teach them, tricks, commands, etc. And he is probably waiting or at least watching for a familiar face. However, if he does have a loving home he will adjust and it is probably best you don't go see him just let him adjust to his new home.
