There are two ways to go about it:
Using the colour wheel, purple is opposite yellow, making them complimetary colours.
The colour wheel goes something like this:
.......................Blue
.......Purple.................... Green
.........Red...................... Yellow
....................Orange
(try to imagine a circle, sorry this was the best I could manage)
With blue and orange as opposites, yellow and purple of opposites and red and green as opposites.
Also, either of the secondary colours on either side of yellow (green or orange) would work well.

It really depends on many things.
Violet is the color opposite (complimentary to) yellow on the color wheel, and combining it with yellow will create a very "loud" yet perfectly harmonious color combination.
An equal balance of red/yellow/blue create harmony (in paint--it's not the same for all mediums). yellow + [red + blue = violet]. The smaller the number of components the color scheme contains (in this case 2, violet and yellow), the "louder" a harmonious color scheme will be.
Some other types of color schemes rely on having "common colors". An example of this is an analogous color scheme, where you have two colors next to each other on the color wheel (which will share at least one primary color). Green and Orange are both analogous to yellow. Schemes with a predominant hue can be useful for expressing particular moods.
Other factors include the psychological impact or cultural significance that a color scheme might have. For example, might take into consideration that Yellow and Black are "alarming" or "danger" colors. The root of this may have to do with poisonous insects, bees, etc., often being yellow and black.
Many other color combinations carry specific meanings within cultural contexts. You might want to check out "The Pantone Guide to Using Color", which talks about this stuff more at length.
