I don't know if I count, since both of my kids are now grown and gone, but yes, there needs to be a limit. I always told the kids that the kitchen was closed after 8:00, and I would warn them at 7:30 to get what they needed before 8. It's not a good idea for them to be eating after that time because it lays in their stomache all night, burning very little calories, and possibly leading to obesity in later life. If they really need a drink, then they can only have water, and depending on the age, I would limit that to no more than an 8 ounce glass. But no food. That's especially important if you've been having a hard time with them finishing their supper. If they know that they'll get no more food after 8, they'll be more likely to finish everything. Now if they're sick and running a temperature, they'll need to drink lots of fluids, so it depends on the situation here. Generally, you need to keep them on a schedule. For their sake and yours. I don't imagine you look forward to doing extra dishes after the dishwasher has already been run, or have extra dishes in the sink overnight. Stand firm. They'll accept it when they see you're serious. <*)))><

No, but that is because our son is underweight and doesn't want to eat. So when he wants something, he gets it! Plus he is a kid, they don't always eat right at meals, some simply don't eat enough, they might truly be hungry. We usually only allow healthy things after dinner though. The thing we deny at least one hour before bed is drinks, kids can sometimes wet the bed if you give them too much liquid before bed.

i am not a parent yet! I am 8 months mother to be of a little girl! and I think when she gets here and old enough to go in the kitchen and get something to eat then she can get something anytime she wants as long as it is not junk food after junk food! like if she gets up in the middle of the night and wants a sandwhich or cereal then I am not going to say NO!

I don't ever allow my kids in my kitchen unless they ask my permission to enter. I hate tripping over people when I'm in there. And its one place I can relax a bit as I prepare food. We don't snack or eat after dinner (5PM) is over. Drinking later means a possibility of bedtime accidents. Eating later is unnecessary, so its not allowed. At least that is how we do it. I don't want overweight kids cause they have free fridge access. And I hate changing sheets at 2AM!
