I am moving back to Fairbanks, Alaska and I have heard rumors that we have to have passports to get thru Canada. I only had to use my Military Id When I went thru back in 2003. Please let me know I am just passing thru to go back to Fairbanks. Is there A ferry I can take instead of driving all the way to Fairbanks,Alaska from Tacoma, Washingtom.

The entry requirements have not changed since 2003, so you can get in with what you did then. Generally, that is a drivers license and a government issued birth certificate.

The current (US) plan is to require a passport starting 2007. (Any US citizen leaving home and expecting to get back in will need a passport. By default, that means Canada would require you have one to enter, or you become our problem.) Not unusual to have to have a passport to leave you home country, just something that Canada/US has enjoyed not having to do.

Here is the link to the Alaska Marine Highway, with details for the ferry from Bellingham to Skagway. The starting price is over $800US for a passenger and vehicle. More depending on the size of vehicle.

The situation at the border changes by the day. At present, all you need is your birth certificate and picture ID, but George W. keeps talking about Canadians having to have passports to get into the US, and if that happens there will be a reciprocal order for everyone coming to Canada from the US. It hasn't happened yet, but it likely will. It's just easier with a passport.
As to the ferry question -- there are cruise ships going directly to Alaska from Seattle. Don't know about ferry ships, but the Port of Seattle will be able to confirm that for you.

It depends how soon you're going to travel through Canada. Right now you can regain entry into the US with picture ID AND birth certificate or other proof of citizenship if not born in the US.

There has been a lot of discussion about passports being required in the future. I've heard both early 2007 and late 2007 as deadlines.

As far as ferries go. I know there's one that goes out of Bellingham. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find all the details.

You will need a passport starting next year. So you should apply for one soon if you dont have one. Its easier, faster, and best to have one, but for now, you can get thru with your normal ID. I took the ferry last year from Bellingham, WA to Haines, AK, and drove the rest of the way (thru Canada). It was really fun, and I would do it again. Its a little expensive though, a little more than if you drove it, and paid the gas and motel money. You have to make reservations way ahead of time, or you can just show up, and hope for a stand-by slot (very hard to get in the summer).

yes there is a ferry. look it up on the web. and if you have ur orders then you can just use your military ID. if ur not in the military anymore then i would suggest looking up the Canadian border laws also.

ps, good luck in alaska, i love it there.
