I was stupid enough to keep a joint checking account with my ex. He used it to pay his cell bill, and I used it to cash paychecks. I went to cash my last check and found out the account is overdrawn. The last time i called him about it he said it would be taken care of and he didn't want to hear about it anymore. I told him he would hear about it until it was taken care of. Should I give him time to take care of it or should I just pay it myself even though I can't really afford it so I can get my name taken off the account? He had it changed so the statements went to him and not me trying to hide it. If I wouldn't have tried to get the check cashed I never would have known. I would like to teach him a lesson in being more responsible with his money but I can't do it w/out hurting myslef in the process. So, should I pay it?

Yes. Pay it off, close the account and take him to small claims if its a good sum of money.

Count your blessings that you divorced him...........or at least ex'd him!

1. open your own account...personal account...checking or savings..bank your money into it....there are free accounts....

2. remove your name off the joint account....he can only destroy your credit history that you have worked hard to achieve..let him know that you are removing your name..or closing the account on your side..usually need the other persons signature....if he says no..then just don't bank any money into this account..he will get the jist that you mean business..and then write a note on your behalf to the creditors (drawing a blank on their names..transunion..etc)..to state your case if there is indeed an issue on your credit track record..this can come back to haunt you..make him sign something saying that he denies to close the joint account..and then photo copy it and send it with your note..so you are not at fault....and give a copy to the bank....some states request this...

good luck!

I agree with WitchTwo. close off the account as you dont want to be listed or given a bad credit rating. Then take him to small claims court, Judge Judy - where are you?
