most certainly. my boyfriend, was in prison for five years from being a drug addict. he was so addicted he robbed a pharmacy and got five years. he is now a devoted christian and does not even feel tempted to do drugs. i go to aa meetings with him and it is the most inspiring thing that i have experienced. people come together to share a common weakness for a common cause- sobriety. one of the steps of recovery is to find a higher power that you are comfortable with that you can meditate to pray to and to admitt that you are powerless over your situation and want to be helped. everyone in these aa meetings say they owe it all to their higher power and positive thoughts. they are steadfast in their prayers and don't give up. there are people there that were sober for twenty years and say it was the help from their higher power. my higher power is god. your body is his temple. you were bought at a price. your body is not your own but it belongs to your higher power. so your higher power will definitely want to help you stop destroying your body but you must surrender yourself and truly believe that your higher power can help you. if you don't believe then you won't receive.

Well, if you belive it, then it will be true. That's how the mystical works for us. In any case, all 12-stop programs (like AA) work on the notion that you surrender your will to a higher power (perhaps God), which will lead you to serenity. Sobriety is one form of serenity

So can Aliester Crowley's Magick
12 Step Programs do not say God, they say a higher power. And include a chapter to the agnositc which I believe explains this.

GOD gave you a free will, He did not even make everyone love HIM, If He had to guide your life and decisions, that would mean that He did not make a good product when He made Humans.
We always have choices, what we are and where we are is a result of the choices we have made. Choices we chose to make.
No, He does not give everyone the exact same hand of cards to
play in this life, too, He never gives you a hand that you cannot play! Where we mess up is looking at the others hand and how they are playing their hand, instead of playing ours the best we can!
What I have typed is what I believe.

i'm an atheist who has been sober over 3 years. if you believe in god and that helps you stay sober, more power to you. but the belief in god isn't necessary to achieve a lasting sobriety. the power has been in your head all along. whatever helps you realize that power is a good thing, even if it is the Easter Bunny (oops, i mean God. sorry).

It's hard to be sober and handle all lifes woes...it is nice to have a "designated driver" to drive the big bus of life while you get your "stuff" together in your life. God is many things to many people , real or not> sometimes it is nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the ride for a change!

You need to consider the fact that you control your behaviour not God. Faith can give you strength to do what you have to do, but you have to decide what you have to do.
