the amount of energy that is relized at higher speeds is greater. The amount of force that is needed to slow a car from 70 mph to 60 mph is much dreater than the amount of energy needed to slow a car down from 20 mph to 10 mph. I think the energy contained increases by the square in the change of speed. So an accident at 60 mph deos much more dammage than an accident at 30 mph 2^2= four times the dammage. that is why as the momentum builds it becomes increasingly more difficult to controll a vehicle. the vehicle wants to stay doing exactly what is is doing, and the force nec to move it greatly increases,, and the counter force it exerts grows much more pronounced, swerving,, loss of traction ect.

Speed and lack of control mixed with not paying attention to your surroundings causes accidents. Not just speed itself. There are plenty of accidents more in fact that are because of people not paying close attention to what they are doing. Sure you have less response time if you are speeding, but then if you are paying attention you can avoid an accident.

,It is generally secondary, but , of course, the higher the rate of speed, the more damage caused.

it is important but not as important as some say. its really more about the mass and make up of a vehicle. if a honda hits a honda at 25 it will be not terrible. but if a hummer hits a honda at 20mph it will be worst because of the mass of the car
