A prefigurement of the crucifixion
Read about the bronze serpent in the Old Testament. When the Jews who were wandering in the wilderness under Moses in the Exodus from Egypt were invaded with the plague of vipers, people were bit and died. But God told Moses to fashion a serpent out of bronze and mount it on a pole. To stand the pole in camp and people bitten by a poisonous viper could come and "look upon" this snake and be healed (saved).
Jesus himself would be raised up on a staff or tree (cross) for the same reason, metaphorically and spiritually.
May God Bless

I think it was His way of telling Nicodemus that Moses lifted the serpent to show others the way, and that He must also be lifted up (crucified) to show others the way also.

When Moses lifted the serpent it was for healing, if I remember right. SO, Jesus was to be lifted up to heal the people of the world from their sins (if they accept.)

According to the mythology he was predicting his own crucifixion and that the crucifixion would bring healing to all who would look upon it. As you can tell from the attitudes of the "turn or burn" Christians in these post, it did not work. They did not get healed they became sicker in their hate and loathing for their fellow human beings. Really has to make you question the validity of Christianity.
