I would start with the one from California first, since it is local and more than likely be easier to obtain records. I use www.ancestry.com I also use a program called My Family Tree Maker (makes it easier to keep information together--it even knows when you have an individual already listed). But some other useful sites are www.genealogy.com and myfamilyhistory.com. I also used Yahoo and Google search engines for the last names.
Word of advice, NEVER PAY for any information you obtain! It's all free, just some sites try to charge you for the same information. Good luck!

hi there youre going to have great fun doing this but i warn you ,you will get to points where there are very little answers sometimes ,the best place to start is the place where there registration of births took place and find there parents name then you can look for dates of marrages and on that you'll find there parents names then from there you can check to see if there where any other kids and thats the best way of starting we did it and we got back to the 17th centuary but that did take a lot of looking and there are people how do this for fun and will help you get youre information .....happy hunting youre family history good luck and take care xx

Talk to your parents and ask them who the oldest person on each parents side of the family is. Talk to the oldest ones and see who they remember and have information about. From there you just work your way down the line. Local records are also a help.
