Smell it. Unless it's a water melon in which case hold it in one hand and press it to your ear and use the other hand to tap on it. You want to hear a very clear and crisp sound through the melon. Works for me. :-)

I have been told that smelling the bottom (not the stem side) of fruit will tell you what your going to get- I've done this + works 95% of the time.

if you are near with the tree u can say that the fruit is fresh.

u can touch and pinch it. If the fruit is hard, then it is still fresh.
