I started running about a week ago, and am running about 6 days a week, depending on my work schedule. My question is, is it to much to run and lift weights 6 days a week. I am overweight and am doing this to get in shape and lose weight (mostly to get in shape). Any advice about running will be helpful. My goal is to be able to run 5 miles daily without stopping.

look, the bottom line is if you believe you can keep up that kind of routine, and you have the resolve and committment to stick to it, than kudos to you.

to me though, healthy weight loss is no more than an average of 1 - 2 pounds per week. that takes time. if you want to lose 30 pounds, it'll take you a few months to do so. when i trained for the nyc marathon, the first two months of running 20-40 miles per week was doable and easy, it was the next 4 months that became difficult. you wake up constantly sore, and the first step you take out of bed aches the bottom of your foot all the way up your spine. and i only ran 4 days per week rather than 6.

so my point to you is this. listen to your body, don't go all gung ho rambo mr. work out for 3 weeks than stop. the key to losing weight and getting in shape is to be consistent. but the only way to keep consistent is to constantly mix up your work out routine. every 3 months or so, you should completely change up your exercise program. google "overtraining" and learn the signs of when it's time to switch up your program.

good luck to you and don't overdo it.

I don't think it is too much. However, you may be doing too much, too soon.

I usually lift weights about 4 times a week and I run 5 - 6. Running is tough on your body and it's only fairly recently that I've been able to do this much running without becoming chronically fatigued / injured.

You don't talk about the intensity of your workouts. If they are leisurely, then by all means, more is probably better. But if they are intense, you may want to give yourself some "easy" days or rest days so that you don't become overtrained, injured, or burned out.

The short answer is, break into running slowly. I see a lot of people on yahoo answers who run for a couple of weeks (every day) and suddenly develop shin splints or knee problems. Usually, the cause is trying to do too much, too soon.

So listen to your body. If you are sore, feeling beat up, etc, give yourself a break. Also, educate yourself about running, pick up a magazine or two (Running Times or Runners World). They have some great injury prevention articles (as well as motivational articles).

Feel free to drop me a line if you have further questions

That's a pretty big goal for just starting to run. I hope you are taking adequate time to warm up and to cool down. Running is hard on the knees, feet, shins, and ankles. Invest in good shoes. Stretch before running for several minutes. In college our instructor had us do a stretch I found beneficial. You need stairs or even a curb. One leg at time, position foot with the ball of the foot on the stair or curb and point the heel of that foot downward. Feel the stretch through the shin and hold for 2o seconds. Repeat on the other foot. Do this stretch several times before and after running. Good luck I hope you make your goal.

hi my name is james, and i think that your overdoing it, the key to losing weight is not how far you run, or how much exercise you do in a day, the key to losing weight in being consistent.

you really are going to burn yourself out. with running, start off with a mile everyday. and work yourself up

Actually you will lose more weight if you switch to every other day.

The body gets broken down by exertion and is repaired by rest in between.

I lost 80 pounds doing it this way.
