A social butterfly is someone who can gracefully float from group to group socially without a thought. It is usually a compliment, so if you are wondering whether you should refer to someone as a social butterfly, consider this:

1)are they female? (guys might be a little put off by being referred to as a "butterfly" in any way)
2) are they well liked by many different types of people?
3) do they make it a point to speak to many people wherever they go?
4) do they have a full social calendar?

If you can answer yes to more than 2 of these, she (or he, if he's, uh, feminine) is a social butterfly.

The term social butterfly usually refers to the person who is always chit chatting with people; socially accepting of others and socially accepted by others. Teachers use the term for the child who usually talks a lot with the kids in the classroom. Not necessarily disruptive, but just enjoys mingling with their classmates and having a good time. My daughter was given the title last year in kindergarten. Her teacher said that she would prefer to "come in with her cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee, pull up a chair and sit around and chit chat the day away". It is not necessarily a bad thing.

I think a social butterfly is someone who likes to talk all the time and doesn't let the other person chat, in the group of people they are with. Wether one or more people.

social butterfly to me means that at a gathering they never stay in one place. always on the move talking with as many people as possible. Versus sitting on the sidelines watching like a wall flower.

They dress cute, act sweet and friendly, and no, do not have low self esteem. They just love being around all the people at the party. They want to meet everyone at least once because that is polite. They like to please people and be pleased. They like to have fun...and be it. They only would not be a good friend if the other person is not very social at all and refuses to try to be.

a social butterfly is someone who flits and flutters from one clique to another socializing and getting along with all kinds of different people. They do not limit themselves to one group.

yes, it applies to people. it means someone who socializes a lot with many people (ie, always chatting around from person to person like how a butterfly flies from flower to flower stopping briefly at each one).
