My own, extensive research in this field leads me to assume that this depends on vrious things:
If you are a vegetarian or better even vegan, almost imperceptible farts are the norm. If you eat fish or chicken, there will be stronger frgrances, and things get quite deadly if you eat eggs and red meat. In all cases, a scientifically measurable fart scent will remain in the air for about 20 seconds, then gradually die down as the gas cools. A well-farted room may retain a distinct fart aroma for up to two days though.
Oh, and one word of advice: No matter what they tell you, it is not good form to try and burn them off, even if it rduces the smell...
