You're not allowed to ride on the pavement - you should have been on the road! Your compensation is not being fined!!

I am sure you can.
The fact that you are breaking the law really shouldn't matter as everyone knows that should something happen to you, some greedy grabbing smart *** will always find a way to make money at the expense of the majority of the population.
Why not go for it and just add to taxes the rest of us pay.
Should also be able to claim for "distress" cos police told you something you didn't want to hear.
I see it happened in Wales, claim the language confused you.
Try "human rights" card. Discrimination against pavement riding cyclists. etc, etc, etc! Why not claim riding on road has caused you trauma! That usually is worth a few thousand.

Of course you can apply for compensation but NOT if you tell them you were riding your bike on the pavement as this is breaking the law!

Best thing to do is tell them you were walking on the pavement when you fell down the manhole then take em for every penny, atfterall you'll only have to use the money to pay the extortionate amounts of council tax they charge us!

You could try, but as you were breaking the law at the time (riding on a public footpath), the council / local authority may ask the police to charge you with several road traffic breaches.

I think you should just learn your lesson, and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, instead of blaming somebody else for your stupidity.

Wouldn't you agree that it is wrong when a burglar claims for compensation because you assaulted him in your house or gets health & safety involved if he falls down your stairs in his 'unsafe workplace'.... you are no different trying to claim compensation whilst carrying out an illegal act.

You are not allowed to ride on the pavement. This annoys me more than anything - ride your bike in the road in future. Pavements are for people.

I'm sorry you fell off - but I sincerely hope you don't get any compensation. You should not have been on there in the first place.

Not likely, at least not on the first try.

Here is what applied in a situation I was involved in: (This was in Chicago. It may be different where you live.)

After reporting the incident, provided the "defect" is a real one (like a pothole, not a crack) the city is obligated to make repairs to the pavement.

If you then experience another incident at the same site within a "reasonable" amount of time (which again, would likely vary depending on where you live), you are then entitled to compensation.

If you're riding somewhere you're not supposed to, then you're probably screwed. It's not impossible that you're still entitled to some kind of protection however, so you could give it a shot.

You were riding on the pavement which will cancel any chance you had of a claim xx But having said that, people do get stupid amounts of money in compensation just for someone looking at them wrong so go for it!!!

You shouldn't be riding your bike on the pavement. Pavements are for pedestrians so you shouldn't be able to claim any compensation. Nobody owes you anything. However, if you had hit a pedestrian, you could be sued for compensation. Shame you didn't really. It would teach you a lesson.

You've got no chance of claiming anything. I'm amazed the police didn't charge you for illegally using the pavement. Pavements are SOLELY for the use of pedestrians.

Bikes shouls NOT be ridden on pavements.

If you can show that the local authority have not maintained the manhole cover, then you have a claim. Take a photograph of the cover and take a witness statement from anyone who might have seen it happen
