Not knowing the details it is hard to say. If you can, rinse the eye out with cool water several times a day, or use eye drops. After that protect the eye with gauze or an eye patch. Sometimes light can be very painful to irritated eyes. You may need to see an eye doctor if the eye doesn't feel better in a few days. In irritated eye could also mean infection within the eye.

A very irritated eye is usually the result of something still in it. You should go to the doctors to have them look at it. Even the smallest piece of dirt, hair, eye lash, can cause an abrasion on the cornea, which can be painful, cause redness, and swell.

Don't touch it is number one! Get a eye bath and clean it out. If it doesn't get better go see your doc :)
