War can be fought for just about anything. Money, politics, religion, power, or simply because that guy looked at you funny.

It's a complex issue, and one that I don't think I could answer in such a short answer, but yeah, war sucks, and is sometimes a "necessary evil" (such as fighting against Hitler in World War 2, cause if no one stood up to him, he and his twisted ideals would cause suffering for untold amounts of people).

That's the sucky thing about human nature. We're one of the few species on the planet that openly kills our own kind, and often on a massive scale too. Most other animals, when they fight, they often only fight till one of them gives up, not until it's dead (assuming it's the same species that is, cause obviously a lion is going to want to kill a gazelle to eat it).

It's planetary. One planet passes too close to another and people on earth begin killing each other. Not that we can know that. We make up all sorts of reasons for wars but it's all just bull$hit. For example, ever hear of the War of the Roses? Such a thing actually happened. There were these two English factions, one side said white roses were the most beautiful, the other side said red roses were the best. And this whole goddamn war erupts. But it really had nothing to do with roses. It was a planetary effect. And since the cause of war does not BEGIN ON EARTH but outside the realm of earth, we are SCREWED. War cannot be stopped.

All of the above...
I think the competitiveness built into humans in all areas of their life is part of the reason. War has existed since humans have existed. Even some animals and insects have smaller scale wars, like they take over territories.

Overpopulation and ethnic shifts. When mankind will be civilized enough to settle these problems by peaceful means, there will be no wars any more.
