We have three cats 1 male and 2 female. The male cat is 2 1/2 and is very loving and affectionate. He is the ultimate in lap cats. One of the female is 2 1/2 as well and is very loving as well but it is when shes in the mood for love she is very independent. One of the things that is so neat about her is that even though shes not as affectionate as her brother when you are under the weather she always there to cuddle with you and give you lots of kisses. Our last cat is going to be a year old the 23rd of this month shes a brat shes is very loving but she expects it all the time. Attention attention attention she loves it. Which is nice but when you had a long day or nite and she nibbling on your nose or whatever body part is sticking out from under the cover. They are all great I think its just the luck of the draw. When getting a cat the only advice I have is get them their shots spay/neuter them and get them insured vet bills can get expensive.

Oh!!!!!!!! by far the famale is better than the males.
The males tend to mark their territory and that is what's stinks so much, fortunately the females don't have the organs of the males and they don't mark everything, in my eyes the famale has a better nature than the males as well and the female does not prowl either

as you can probably guess from reading these answers, there is no way to say which is best. I've owned both and as every cat has their own personality, that's what really counts, not whether they are male or female (really, once they are neutered gender doesn't make much of a difference)

In my opinion females are easier... stereotypically males can be more aggressive and territorial spraying and scratching your furniture for example. But I do have a male cat who is very timid so it depends from cat to cat.

depends on what you are seeking in a pet ...

assuming both are neutered / spayed as early as possible, you should not have any problems with spraying and heat.

male cats will retain their kitten like play if neutered early enough, because they do not develop the high levels of testosterone in unfixed males. warning ... pluses and minuses, especially if you have nice furniture and carpets!

female cats are generally more affectionate for longer periods of time, and less territorial than male cats. my boy marks wall corners and tables with his whisker glands, which require a bit more cleaning.

overall, you have to look at each cat's personality ... just like humans, you can judge a kitty by its sex.

I have found male cats to be better (based on my own, family and friends' cats). They are more affectionate and friendlier. They seem more eager to please. The female cats I have known are a bit more standoffish, though they can still be sweet and fun.
