I am with a volunteer animal group and I would suggest you find one that you can interact with and be assured that all the money you give them goes to homeless dogs. We are part of Petsmart Charities and do our adoptions at petsmart. You should visit your local stores and talk to the volunteers. Talk to them about what each does. I have a couple that I adopted a dog to their son and about every other month they come up and buy me a couple of bags of dog food for the fosters. This itself is a great help.
We have a guy that owns a car dealership that comes up about every three months - no interest in a dog- but gives us a hundred dollar bill to help take care of them. Sometimes I think its that he finds one he wants to adopt but cant so in his way he is sponsor that pet.
These people are regular donators that know everything we do is for the animals and they have seen us spend so much out of our own pockets to make sure everything is saved. They know we are not compensated in any way for what we do.
I would suggest you find your petsmart charity in your neighborhood. Its always nice to see and know the people that appreciate what we do and that they see the heartache we go through when we tell people how we rescued each pet.

I would be VERY careful donating money to almost all of the national 'humane' orgs. They use their money to push anti-dog laws and NOT to help actual animals. Their agenda is, after all, NO MORE PETS! They LIE and CON people out of their money and then use it to take away their pets.
Donate to a local rescue or shelter, preferably supplies like dog food, and not cash.

Be careful about donating money to ANY charity you see on TV or on the web.
If you choose to donate money to an animal services agency, start with your local Humane Society, or aspca.org, or peta.org.
Don't believe everything you see and hear.
I donate to my local H/S and to PETA.
To answer your questions, no I do not know what ad you saw.

PetSmart has commercials on that sometimes refer to their charities...especially in light of Katrina and recent events to draw attention to the plight of homeless animals. http://www.petsmart.com/charities/landing/heroes_contest.shtml Also animal planet airs ASPCA Commercials for their charitable organization. There is also a worldwide charity for all animals but I can't for the life of me remember it right now, sorry :(
