Pick your favourite guitar song (an easy one) and download the chords from a guitar tabs website, then learn those chords.
This will give you motivation and some fun and its not just memorizing boring old chords and scales.
If you want to be a pro or a concert guitarist, memorize scales, otherwise, just have fun with songs.

All the answers given thus far are good. Have someone draw the basic chords for you and show you how to place your fingers on them.
It would be most helpful to have someone nearby to assist in strumming techniques and chord patterns common to most songs.
That's the way I began 50 years ago. In high school I learned how to read and write music, and from that, the world of music opened up for me.
If you want to really play the guitar you have to live it, love it, even sleep with it. Fifteen minutes daily practice? No way. Practice until you're too tired to hold the guitar any longer or something else interferes with it. Once your calluses are tough as boots you're ready for more and then some.
Good luck. Above all, enjoy the instrument and what it can do for you.

Here is what I did.
I was able to sing and had a good ear.
By learning chords I was able to sing along on the simplist of songs.
Previous to picking up a guitar I had listened to a lot of music and different kinds of music.
Many songs are just three chords.
Practice each day for at least 15 minutes. G chord, C chord, D 7th.
Find a simple song with three easy chords.
There are different ways of strumming and you will get this if you are familiar with the songs.
Make them your own, tell their story,
Have fun.

Go to a music shop and get an acoustic starter kit, and get used to the feeling of the instrument, after a few days, try to pick up a decent beginner's book/video, they are great substitutes for lessons.
Have fun.

Learn your chords and scales. Those are the most important thing. Don't bother yourself with play songs until you are good and ready. Getting a book or a video tape will help a lot as well.
