I was just wondering,

I am active duty army and I am currently going through college in which the military paid my tuition. Even though I am not paying anything for school can I apply for my GI Bill and get it.

I got the GI Bill when I first came in but never researched it. I am close to my degree and wont need it when I get out of the military and I know I have to be going to school to claim it. Can I do that now and if so how....

Thanks.

Sgt B,

You CAN use the GI Bill to help fund your college. In this instance, you would be using it to pay for your books. This is not something I recommend.

You say that you won't need it once you get out, and I am HOPING that you mean that you are close to earning your Doctorate. You may decide to go back to school (college or Vo-Tech) and earn either another degree, or a certificate. In that case, the GI Bill will help you immensely. You have 10 years after ETS to use the GI Bill. After that, the government will absorb the money.

Good luck

That's an easy question. You have to be enrolled in some sort of educational institution for the benefits. But if you ever want to go back to school for another degree or a Masters etc. you can use it then. You can use it for Vocational schools too.
From the time you get out of the military, you have a window of 10 yrs to use your benefits.

I gave you the site to look up the information.

I don't believe you can, since you are currently taking advantage of a government paid education. And don't assume that you won't need it when you get out.. my husband enlisted in the Navy with a degree already in hand. he was accepted into OCS a few years later and is currently getting his Master's courtesy of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. When he retires, he is planning on either getting a second Bachelors, a second Masters or possibly his Doctorate with his GI Bill.
