A beer is okay.
On his/her birthday, maybe 2.
OK. That's enough. STOP.

Yes. It is LEGAL. I dunno why everyone is saying it is illegal. I work as a waitress and have my liquor license, so I KNOW what's legal. As far as beers/alcohol, as long as you are the parent and you're watching your teen around the house, you can give 'em a beer/beers. If you are out at a bar/restaurant, you may give them a beer ONLY if they are 18, and they must be close to you and under your watchful eyes.
As far as sitting at a bar...
If a restaurant has a closed bar (just beers and wine and they close early around 10 pm), the child must be 18 to sit at the bar. If it is a full bar that serves mixed drinks and the works, then you have to be 21 to sit at the bar. (full bars usually close around 2 am in the morn).
As far as my opinion of giving your teen a beer...
Well put it this way... I am 18, and I think there's no harm in giving your teen a beer. It is better for them to learn with you if they like beer/alcoholic drinks or not. There's no way of telling if a party they go has alcohol or not. I've been to plenty of keg parties, and I don't go nuts and get drunk because my parents have let me drink in the house. I'll just have around two drinks over the course of a few hours. By letting them drink with you, they'll be less likely to go nuts and get drunk off their *** at high school parties and so on, when they've already had the chance and experienced alcohol before. So they'll be more likely to handle alcohol in a mature way any time they are out at parties (well, the parties when you're not around).
Hope this helps!

I think that it is very important for teens to learn to drink in a responsible way. My mum let me have a beer every now and then. She thought it was better that it was going on under her own roof than to have me going out and experimenting and going nuts at wild teenage parties. I turned out good.

Oh. I just had this discussion with my BIL. He was visiting with his 16 yr old daughter and we were playing poker with her and all having a few beers....the poker game dragged on and about 1am I asked BIL, can (my niece) sit and have a beer with us....
He got pretty firm with me and said no. I weakly protested saying that she was with us and my parents let me....he got a really nasty look in his eye that told me I better drop it....
(None of this took place in front of her, I pulled BIL aside....)
I dropped it, but dwelled....and 2 days later I pulled him aside again...I apologized for my suggestion and then pointed out that my parents allowed me a beer here and there and as a teen and made sure I had my fun at home and....and taught me that beer is legal and see what it does!! I never ever tried anything beyond legal alcohol and am responsible when I do drink. And still only have the most fun with them and family!!!
Then I pointed out to him that his parents were hard a**, don't drink, you can't go out, you sit here and watch me watch TV and your mom knit parents....and the first thing he did at 18 was ditch them and indulge himself in every form of substance abuse out there....
Believe it or not he was only mad at me for a couple hours...

I would say it depends where in the teens, but...yeah. Let em see that its not THAT big of a deal - no need to break multiple laws to get it and then drink it.
I believe that in at least some european countries, its common for teens to drink wine with a meal...We Yanks' are an uptight bunch.

My mom would let me try wine as a teen. She couched it as it's part of the dining experience. I learned to treat it like food - moderation and enjoyment not to get drunk. I don't have kids yet, but I can't imagine it being a different way.

it is NOT illegal for a person of any age to drink alcohol when on private property when the property owner is ok with that person drinking. It is not the forst step to addiction, letting your teen drink will promote responsible consumption

Though illegal, I would say it is okay. Just make sure that he/she understands that it is not to pkay to do so unless you are in their presence. Remeber, back in the day the drinking age used to be 18. Hell, in Europe some countries don't even have am age limit.
