These always have something else if you look at the wording.....the riddle assumes that you will first, not remember that Tom is going to town amongst all of the numbers....then, the "correct" answer assumes that you do remember this and that the other people and their pets are going the exact opposite direction. However, it doesn't say anywhere that these men and wives and children and cats are NOT going to town also. They could merely have been coming from a different directing with the same destination, meeting roads with Tom somewhere along the way. So the answer could be one--Tom--OR it could be one hundred fifty-six....Tom PLUS all of the others.
