were the parents of your soon to be husband married? if not it is very common that he has his mother's family name. even if they were married and divorced, he could have chosen to change his family name to his mother's maiden name. also you can change your family name to your mother's if you don't like how your father's sounds. I wouldn't care honestly what family name he has. I won't marry his family name but the person.

Maybe I'd care if this was the 1920's, cos back then he'd have been considered illegitimate. But, now we're all bastards from broken families!!

My boyfriend took his mum's maiden name after his parents divorced. It reflects the family that he feels closest to. It is now our daughter's name and will be my last name soon too.
So...it's all good.

I guess it really wouldnt matter, maybe his father wasnt around or there was bad blood between them & he chooses to be named after his mother because she was the one who raised him??? you know to show honor & respect to the person who he honors & respects???
