I am traveling to Paris for the first time in October and I was wondering if American bathrooms were common to find or if most require "hovering" for lack of a better term. Also, what do the handicapped do in that situation?

Thank you
ber

Not a problem. Most are clean. Just don't expect to see seat covers. There's always water available.

Take extra careful when some local approached you (inside the WC in subways) and asked you if you speak english, just ignore. They are beggars and will give you a letter written in english asking for some money. They will follow you sometimes.

What's an American bathroom? There are public, self cleaning toilettes all over Paris and some are handicapped accessable as well.

the bathrooms are very similar to american restrooms, but you'll want to note ...

1. there is generally less water in the toilets
2. many toilets do not have seat covers (i just used tp)
3. some hotels have a bidet (for cleaning)
4. automatic sinks are very rare, if not inexistent

good luck!

I take it you have reference to what is often called a "Turkish Toilet." These certainly continue to be found in many places and can be quite disturbing to people who are not used to them.

In general you will notice that European cities and establishments make far fewer accomodations for the disabled than are considered normal and/or required by law in the United States.

You're going to Paris & looking for AMERICAN bathrooms?
Your best bet is to buy a cup of coffee & then use the toilet/WC.

Try this "Ou sont les toilettes?" AFTER you've bought something :)

They're actually very friendly. Just be polite.

The "secret" to using restrooms in Paris...[most of Europe as well] is to go to McDonald's..

The restrooms are clean and FREE!!!!
Get a coffee and a danish if you feel guily about using the facilities w/o buying anything.....

The bathrooms are exactly the same as they are here. In fact, I've found most of them to be cleaner
