I used both non-spiritual meditation (including relaxation response) and spiritual. Both really really helped but you have to do it consistently. For the spiritual, I used 'A Course in Miracles' and Zen. Both really shouldn't be called 'medtitation'; they're really mind training but I lump it under meditation because others sometimes see them that way. I've had real spiritual 'glimpses' from them and was able to literally live my life in a much happier, much less stressed way because my ego/self was reduced by the training. For the non-spiritual versions, if you do the 'relaxation response' 4 times per day, it can REALLY help you relax.

Japa Meditation is the most effective type of meditation in this age, where it is very difficult to "still the mind", because we are living in such a tumultuous age with so many constant disturbances in daily life.
Therefore it is recommended to rise early in the morning and chant the following mantra :-
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Krishna, Krishna,
Hare, Hare,
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama, Rama,
Hare, Hare.
This sixteen word mantra (mantra means to free the mind) is called the maha-mantra or the great chant for deliverance, it is a transcendental sound vibration, so it will have an immediate effect if chanted with sincerity.
The effects of this chanting is not an artificial imposition on the mind, this sound vibration automatically connects you to the spiritual stratum and revives the original spiritual body that is temporarily covered by a gross material body and subtle conditioned mind, because the nature of the self or soul is unlimitedly blissful, the more you chant and meditate on this sound vibration, the happier you become.

At first, meditation was more of a pain than it was a relief. First starting is hard, or it was for me. There were a lot of distractions, it was hard to clear my mind. But after I got into it, and meditated enough, it became very relaxing. It sounds corny, but it sometimes made it feel like a weight had been lifted off of me.

Very difficult indeed if you have never done it. A lot of people never get into it for the simple reason they cannot stand themselves.
You ever notice how we need "white noise", i.e.,radio, T,V,etc.? Its because we can't spend 5 minutes with ourselves.
But if you can get over that hurdle, you've got it made. And no one can ever take it away from you. And the peace. My God, the peace!
The only thing better is the prescribed prayer of Islam.
Come to Islam...

Yes. I enjoy meditation. It helps me to focus my mind and be more consciously aware of my thoughts, behaviors, attitudes, etc. I practice nam japa meditation (repeating of a divine name or mantra).

Like everybody knows it is very deep relaxing for body & mind. For soul, enlightenment, ultimate knowledge, nirvana that is great, I believe, because I'm blessed with some truth like our body is like machine. This is very simple sentence. But when you see your body is behaving like automated machine & you are only watching it.......... Atlast, I would like to say in anycircumstances I can not go back.

Yes.
IT cleared my mind, made me more at ease, lowered by body signs and made me aware of things hundreds of feet away. I could hear the world once I stoped my own noise in my head.
