a copy of win xp was put on my laptop and it's making it run very slow. I have win 98 disk that i would like to reinstall over xp and i understand that can not be done by just putting the disk in . Is there and alternate way to install win 98 over existing xp?

Boot from cd98, run dos, delete windows xp folder, restart pc then install win98 from cd. So u wont loose any document in your pc. BUT make sure that youre using fat32 not NTFS format in your hardisk or you'll have to format your hard disk and loose everything inside.
If you have space in your hardisk u can using partition magic8 to make new partition then install your 98 into new partition. Then only you can remove your xp.

goodluck

Since Windows XP is the current and latest OS for computers, the Win 98 disc is an earlier version. This means that your Windows XP OS will not allow it to over write the hard drive.

If your Win XP system is slow, it may not be the OS at all, but it may mean several basic things. First, make sure that your system has at least 256 Mb RAM, which is the nominal requirement for Win XP, second, look at the registry, by selecting RUN and typing "REGEDIT" then select OK.

Inside Regedit, look for loaded programs that are assigned to the startup menu, do not eliminate any programs that windows needs to run your pc, if you are not sure, take your pc to a professional for tuning.

Something else that you should consider is that Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft. I have Win XP and a good download for you would be "Tweak UI", make sure that you download this from Microsoft.

If you are still determined to have Win 98, you will have to manually erase the hard drive using an approved scrub software for your pc, then you can load Win 98. Make sure that you can do this in respect to the drivers needed to run your laptop.

You don't want to install 98 ''over'' XP, you want to format your drive and then install from scratch.

You got to make sure you create a boot disk first(see first link below), then backup any important data such as excel or word files, your favorites and your my documents folders, music, movies, games, pictures and the rest on removable hardware(CD or hard drive). BACK UP YOUR DRIVERS, if you know how to.

Anyways, here is the step-by-step guide(second link below) on how to install 98SE. You may want to print it before getting started.

It's also a good idea to get someone to bring is PC over to your place while you reinstall yours, you never know what you will need off the web while doing it. The second PC is there to get your required stuff by connecting the web so you can put it on your machine.

Installing Windows is always fun.

So.....have fun.

You can have 98 run virtually in XP. Sounds like you have a laptop that does not meet the requirements for XP. You might try formatting the hard drive. You would lose all programs if you do not back them up first.

U gotta format the drive on which the OS is installed... U need a boot CD along... once it is formatted then u can install the other OS... Plz chk the file systems of the other drives coz XP and 98 support completely differnt file systems (fat32 / NTFS)... Best thing is to contact ur local system administrator

you have to do a low-level format first. Go to Maxtor and download - powermax.exe which is provided free. Only after doing a low level format, u can install your win 98. But u must know that win 98 is obselete and u may not get any updates. The next best choice for u is to install win2000 which is good.
