As others have said, you can join the US military if you are a permanent resident: have a green card. You have to be a citizen to be an officer. Here is the naturalization handbook: it has everything you need to know about becoming a citizen, including how time in the military counts:

First of all, you are incorrect about the Air Force. I am a resident alien who joined the Army and served my time. I am still not a citizen. You only need to be a resident alien ( at least you did) to join the military. If this has changed, please let me know. As for the length of time it takes to become a citizen, well that depends on your personal circumstances. Usually, it takes 6- 12 months or so, sometimes longer, and sometimes less to become a citizen. From what I was told, it depends on where in the country you live, and how busy the closest INS office is to you. Having your paperwork in order along with any other documents you need to furnish will prevent unecessary delays from occuring. Good luck.

If you have a green card you can join the air force. There are no programs to get your citizenship quicker. If you are married to an American citizen, it is three years otherwise 5. If you serve in the armed forces, I think you can get it quicker...not very sure about that.
