because unlike most other journeys you can't turn around and come back if you don't like where you end up

Even in life most people are fearful of change. We get settled into a pattern of living and change is something that we're afraid of. And what bigger change can there ever be than going from life to death?
And this is something we have absolutely no control over. Everyone reading this will die someday. And that's why we fear death, because it's out of our control, and we really don't know what's on the other side of death. Coming from a Christian background my hope is that after death I will experience a new and better life as promised in the Bible to those who obey God's Commandments.

Because of the unknown. If people knew where they was going
when get ready to die there would be no reason to be fearful. Now lots of christian folks do not feel fearful, because lots of people and died and came back to life and gave accountable stories. I for one. Traveling down a tunnel seems to be in some
spirtitual form and came toward an opening of a tunnel and seen
a bright light. I heard or saw nothing else and then I immediately
started talking and remember these words, Lord I cannot go right
now cause I have to go back home and see about my boys, cause one of my sons wanted me to bring him something from the store. This car wreck ended and twirling around and making a long story short, God spared my life and I was very thankful. Doing that process nothing felt fearful in my being, so I suppose
in the prescent of the Lord Thy God - No fear. I believe layman
when it was said death is not painful or one fears the unknown
cause they hate to leave a world that they know of in this physical
body, but our spiritual body will be better.

Death is the end of a long journey and most people fear death because of fear of the unknown. Also because they are not ready to leave this world and their loved ones. Another reason is the fact that they are not ready to face their Maker or God. and to make account of their life on earth.

I dont think most people do fear death.

0 - 18 years
The very young, don't think about it at all, and do things and activities that actually court death because of there total lack of understanding of the danger or the possibility of death.

18-30 years.
Most people at this age dont think about death, they are still young enough that they donot perseve themselves as ever dying, they may take a few more precautions but they dont fear it becuase they dont think about it.

30-60 years
This age group are more likely than the ones before to think about death, and therefor to have most reservations about it, but still do not think that the majority of them actually 'fear' it, they are still to preoccupied with living that the thought of dying is far from there everyday thougth's - so they dont fear it becuase they dont activly think about it. ( i fall into this age group )

60-70 years.
A few of there freinds have died so they know that there time is up within the next decade or so, but they have there family around them. They can see that there family is doing well, and they care more about them than they do about themselves; they are so caught up in caring about others that they really, again, dont spend a great deal of time thinking about dying, except for when one of there freinds passes away, and then they truly never believe it's going to happen to them tomorrow, and tomorrow the grand kids are coming round, so they don't think about it.

70-85 Years.
Most of there freinds have passed on, and they mourn there loss, there family is all now grown up there kids, kids are adults and doing there own thing. health has deteriated and things are getting harder to do, days become more of a struggle - death is coming they know this, but when it does they will meet it with pride and dignity making there passing as easy on there remaining friends and family as possible.

85+
Rarely see much of the family, most friends are already gone to the other side, death is not something to fear anymore but more like a possible reunion with departed freinds and loved ones, nothing to be feared more like a new adventure to be undertaken. Even if there is nothing on the other side, at least all the aches and pains will be gone, and peace will be known.

So i disagree that most people fear death - most people dont even think about dying. The ones that do are missing so much in living there life for the day and the enjoyment of the moment that it is good that they are in the minority.

I believe most people fear death, simply because they do not know exactly whats going to happen afterwards. Is there an after life? Is there more to life after you die? If you think enough on the subject-you'll probably come up with so many answers you wont know what to do with them.

The fear of death is common. Some believe that it is the cessation of existence. Nothing happens after we die so, ultimately life has no purpose. That is not my opinion though. I exist so I MUST have a purpose. Discovering that specific purpose requires that we must consider that a larger being than ourselves also exists. That being is called God. If there is no life after death then, this life is but a mockery of my very soul.

Because of the uncertainty of their belief system.

I myself, am not fearful of death. I believe with all my heart and soul that Allah (SWT) will fufill His promise. I never felt this assurance practicing Christianity.

But that's what works FOR ME...

I spent many years as a Paramedic, and it never fails that the old ladies in the front of the church, the ones who do the most hollerin' about "I can't wait to see my Jesus!", are the ones who tell Him to hold off when they have any idea they're gonna die.

People who are uncertain of what will happen after they die fear death. I know where I will be, so I fear dying instead. That could hurt.

Don't know. I'm a Jarhead. I stoped fearing death a long time ago. It wasn't for any religious reasons either.

Uncertainty about their eternal destiny.

As a Christian I am not afraid of death (though I am afraid of pain).

I am not afraid of death because I know that I will be with the Christian God, in heaven, when I die.

I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).

Cordially,
John
