While this will be on your permanent record, it is a misdemeanor crime. Most states are only concerned with felonies. My advice, make restitution for this crime, speak with the store manager to see if you can get the charges dropped for some sort of deal.

Yes, you have a permanent record. Did your shoplifting charge occur before your 18th birthday? If not, and you were 18, then unfortunately, that is an adult charge. Your best bet would be to speak to an attorney. Seriously, would you hire an aspiring teacher who shoplifts?

NO YOUR LIFE IS RUINED! You will NEVER become a teacher or astronaut or anything of any worth. You will wander alone in the universe for your entire miserable life. No woman will ever want you. Stop being a paranoid maniac and consult a psychiatrist if you can't get your nervous tics under control.

I would try to get a plea with the district attorney for a lesser offense provided you make restitution and perform some community service, I really hope this does not hurt your chances for what you want to do, and I hope you lose those sticky fingers

Theft is a misdemeanor, and background checks can only look for felonies...if a druggie can become a pastor, a shoplifter can become a teacher.
but no more stealing, ok?
