Ah but we can. In my religion our family and friends that have passed are called Akhu. They do communicate with us. I occasionally will see one of them in my dreams even. Sometimes I am guided to go a different way home or to go into a cemetery. People that have passed on do communicate with you. You just have to learn to listen to them.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 says For the living know that they will die; but the dead do not know anything; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten.
Not that you forget them but they have no active memory to speak to you.
You can communicate with things you can't see, but beware.
In l Kings chapter 28 v.7 Saul sought out a medium and asked her to call up Samuel so she after reminding him that he had passed a law that this was forbidden did so for him when he guaranteed her safety. She called up Samuel and an impersonating spirit answered.

Who says we aren't? Maybe the answer is, we CAN communicate with the afterlife....just a sad fact that 99% of us don't know how to do it or control the process to do it.
Besides, if we all master the technique of communicating with the afterlife, wouldn't that leave folks like Char and John Edward out of a job????

We can communicate with those in the afterlife. Because it's done on a spiritual level, a level many aren't attuned to, we don't always recognize it as communicating with others.

I asked my mom, a devout Christian, about this one a few months ago. Her belief is that once our loved ones are in heaven, they are devoted to the goodness there, enjoying the perfection that is heaven. Why would they want to see, much less hear about, the hell that is still on earth? That would be cruel to make them see how hard we still have it when they have it so good.
Of course, you must be a Christian to subscribe to that opinion. I believe there is no afterlife... this is it, here and now, so make the most of it.

Ah, but we can! The souls in the afterlife have a vague idea of what goes on here now. We can pray to them to help us attain salvation and we can pray for their souls to get to heaven. We can ask them to help us do things and make important decisions.

We do not communicate with people lovingly when they are alive, so what would you achieve even if you could communicate with them afterlife?

There is some ways, if you believe so, call the person's name when you wanted to share some coke with them, and pour the coke on the ground while calling their names.
And fire the letter by calling the person's name and they will be able to receive your letters...

It is important to first understand what happens when we die.

If the dead are conscious of nothing, then the question becomes who are they talking to?
